Eurovision nightGot myself some ice cream and will be making myself compfy on the sofa so I'm ready for the big, glittery, horrible music, camp, pointless politics, drama that is eurovision. It never disappoints me. :la:
Sadly I will be alone for this one. Matt had to do a concert he didn't want to do, so I will be live tweeting (humonlazydiva) my impression of the whole shebang. :D
The Echo chamber dilemmaThe promise of the Internet was that unlimited information and experiences would draw us together. But instead it seems to have driven us apart.
For years I've observed this behavior but haven't been able to vocalize it correctly. Originally I called the behavior of collective opinions as "the hive mentality" of the Internet. But that wasn't exactly right and I often got called out on it. The most prominent example was when I made a comic about a guy disagreeing with opinions and being shouted at till he remained quiet, eventually fading into the background with everyone else. The consensus of that comic was that if you disagree with someone you aren't bullied into not speaking, but instead are free to go someplace else where people who do agree with you exist. And you know what? That wasn't what i was trying to convey, but is sadly true. The Internet is not a hive mind. It's many tiny pocket echo chambers of mutual agreements.

Facing my enemy...

In my "artistic life", a thing bugs me a lot: I can't use real brushes! Seriously!
I hated paintings (or perhaps the teachers) in high school, and since then (because I'm stubborn and I entered in a "I hate brushes - brushes hate me" loop) I've never touched a brush again.
I can use pencils, pastels, charcoal, chalks... but no brushes.

well... the time to face my enemy has come: this evening I'll start taking oils lessons!
It's going to be a disaster, I've got a huge list of things that I have to buy this afternoon... obviously, I own nothing that can be used for oil paintings... :P
But the painter is going to teach me is extremely skillful!! I hope I'll be able to learn something from him... even if I'll not end with good oil painting, I'll learn painting technics that I'll be able to apply to digital painting, I hope.

Well, I'm really excited and a bit frightened... but tomorrow I'm going to tell you how it has been!

i confess I am self teaching myself to paint ..ouch ^_^ I know that feeling alot of teachers are just impatient and they slap color on a cnvas and EXPECT you to know what they did ..it's like huh??

well, I was very unlucky with teachers in highschool... if only they were good in painting, at least... but no, I wasn't able to respect them even artistically.

This painter I'm taking lessons from it's actually really good! Let's hope him to prove himself a good teacher too! :)

hey hey, I know that you can do it!! :#1:
forget that your using the brush, and just think "ooh whatever, I'm only using this so not to smudge all over my fingers :giggle:" although getting your fingers dirty is part of the fun ;p
But yeah! just forget how your going to do this and just focus on what you wanna do and put into your canvas and enjoooy~~ !! :D

I'm actually doing just some color studies, but I've already learned how to get completely dirty... not just my fingers!!!

But I'm going to try to paint something soon... so I'll be able to compare my first painting after just some color studies with the others I'll do during the lessons... I hope I'll see my improvements!!

I fear I always want to try things that are too much for my capacities... ^^; but well, I'm striving to improve!!!
